Garden Mint (aka Spearmint) is the variety most commonly used for cooking. It features lush, green leaves held off short stems which have a distinctive mint flavour and aroma. It spreads via the stems which root as they touch the ground. It typically grows to 15 cm tall and 40 cm wide, and can be contained with trimming. Best results are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site, though it is tolerant of moderate frost, some shade, and short periods of dry. Garden Mint is commonly included in herb and cottage gardens, planted around outdoor living areas, or maintained in a container. It is often grown indoors as a potted plant in the kitchen. This variety is not as invasive as other varieties which also spread via their root system.
