Abutilon Ashford Red, commonly known as Chinese Lantern, Flowering Maple, or Parlour Maple, is an evergreen shrub renowned for its nodding, bell shaped, flowers. The red flowers are produced in abundance from spring through autumn, and are complemented with lush, dark green foliage. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide, and responds well to pruning which encourages fresh, new growth. Best flowering results are achieved when grown in a warm, sunny spot on a free draining soil. This lovely plant will grow equally well in full sun or partial shade and is tolerant of moderate frost and cool climates. However, in such environments it may become deciduous. Abutilon Ashford Red is commonly included in a mixed planting, added to cottage gardens, or used as a backdrop for smaller plants where it can also serve as a screen.
