Bambusa Alphonse Karr Details

Bambusa multiplex Alphonse Karr is a variety of bamboo grown for its striking yellow shoots which are striped with green. During summer and autumn, the leaf sheaths are shed to reveal a deep pink stem which quickly ages to yellow. It typically grows to 8 m tall and 4 m wide with stems about 35 mm in diameter. Best growth is achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade across a wide range of soil types except extreme wet or dry. It is a hardy plant that will tolerate frost and coastal conditions though shelter from wind is important to avoid broken stems. Bambusa Alphonse Karr is commonly used as a feature plant, for privacy screening, hedging, or as a backdrop for smaller plants. Regular trimming keeps this bamboo looking fresh as well as containing growth.
