Berberis Helmond Pillar Details

Berberis Helmond Pillar, commonly known as the Japanese Barberry Plant, is a lovely variety due to its great colours and form. The small leaves on this deciduous shrub emerge an intense purple in spring, age to become purple with dark green undertones, then turn varying shades of orange, yellow and red in autumn before falling. Tiny, pale yellow flowers are produced in spring which result in bright red berries during winter. It grows with a narrow, columnar habit to about 2 m tall and 75 cm wide. Plants are tolerant of most growing conditions except extreme wet or dry and do best when planted on well-drained site in full sun. They are tolerant of frost, cool climates, and coastal conditions. Berberis Helmond Pillar is commonly grown as a hedge, included in a mixed planting, grown as a specimen, used to line or border an entrance, or maintained in a container. The thorns make it ideal to block thoroughfares and trimmed plants will form a dense, impenetrable hedge of nice, even form and texture. For hedging space plants 50 cm apart.
