Camellia Fairy Blush is a much-loved shrub in New Zealand gardens. It is most commonly grown as specimen, clipped into a hedge, added to a mixed planting, or used as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is a great complement to a modern or cottage garden, bringing both colour and elegance to a space. It is the gorgeous foliage and flowers of this plant that makes Camellia Fairy Blush an excellent choice for a New Zealand garden.
The Camellia Fairy Blush shrub grows to a size of about 1.5 metres tall and 1 metre wide and will reach this size in 4-5 years. The growth rate of Camellia Fairy Blush depends on how well they are looked after, how warm the climate is, and the amount of trimming they receive while they grow.
Growing the best Fairy Blush Camellia hedge starts with determining the plant spacing. As a general guide, a spacing of 50 cm between the plants is the ideal spacing for a Camellia hedge. If you want the hedge to fill in faster, you can close the spacing to 40 cm. However, going wider than 50 cm will have two impacts. The first is that the gap between the plants at the base will be harder to fill in. The second is that the plants will tend to grow wider rather than upward. At a closer spacing the plants compete for light, and as they do this, they push each other upwards. The Plant Company recommends a 40-50 cm spacing to achieve an amazing Fairy Blush Camellia hedge.
The best Fairy Blush Camellia hedge has a spacing of 40-50 cm between the plants. A string-line is used to ensure planting accuracy as you don’t want a wonky hedge! The trees should be staked to get them to grow upwards and this will help support them as they establish. Start clipping the sides of the hedge about six months after planting. We do this because every time the tip of a stem is removed, the buds below it will sprout which results in a dense hedge. The best Camellia Fairy Blush hedges are lightly trimmed in spring and again in autumn. Be sure to use shrub fertiliser in spring to keep the plants thriving.
The Fairy Blush Camellia plant performs best in NZ when grown in full sun on a well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. It is tolerant of frost once established as well as cool, and humid climates. Wind protection is important to ensure branches are not snapped and to allow it to flower prolifically.
The Camellia Fairy Blush flower colour is white with a pink blush and these are produced in late winter and spring.
The Camellia Fairy Blush shrub grows to a size of about 1.5 metres tall and 1 metre wide. A shrub of this size can be trimmed as necessary which not only contains growth but also makes the plant bushier and can stimulate increased flowering. Any trimming is best undertaken after flowering.
