Camellia High Fragrance is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens. It is most commonly grown as specimen, clipped into a hedge, added to a mixed planting, or used as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is a great complement to a modern or cottage garden, bringing both colour and elegance to a space. It is the gorgeous foliage and flowers of this plant that makes Camellia High Fragrance an excellent choice for a NZ garden.
The Camellia High Fragrance shrub grows to a height of about 2 metres tall and 1.5 metres wide. A shrub of this size can be trimmed as necessary which not only contains growth but also makes the plant bushier and can stimulate increased flowering. Any trimming is best undertaken after flowering.
Growing the best High Fragrance Camellia hedge starts with determining how far apart to space the plants. As a general guide, a spacing of 50 cm between the plants is the ideal spacing for a Camellia hedge. If you want the hedge to fill in faster, you can close the spacing to 40 cm. However, going wider than 50 cm will have two impacts. The first is that the gap between the plants at the base will be harder to fill in. The second is that the plants will tend to grow wider rather than upward. At a closer spacing the plants compete for light, and as they do this, they push each other upwards. The Plant Company recommends a 40-50 cm spacing to achieve an amazing High Fragrance Camellia hedge.
The High Fragrance Camellia plant performs best when grown in full sun on a well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. It is tolerant of frost once established as well as cool, and humid climates. Wind protection is important to ensure branches are not snapped and to allow it to flower prolifically.
The Camellia High Fragrance flower colour is pink and these fade to white. The blooms are produced in late winter and spring.
