It produces masses of dark blue flowers in spring, which together with the foliage, provides an outstanding display as it grows to 1.5 m tall and 2.5 m wide. Ceanothus impressus makes for an attractive filler in a mixed planting and is often used as a backdrop for smaller plants.

Ceanothus impressus, commonly known as California Lilac, is a spreading, evergreen shrub with small, deeply veined, glossy, dark green leaves. It produces masses of dark blue flowers in spring, which together with the foliage, provides an outstanding display. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 2.5 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. It is a hardy plant that will grow well in full sun or partial shade provided it has good drainage. It does benefit from shelter and will tolerate frost and coastal environments once established. Ceanothus impressus makes for an attractive filler in a mixed planting and is often used as a backdrop for smaller plants.
