It will grow in full sun or partial shade conditions but does require some shelter and protection from frost when young. Once established it is tolerant of windy sites, coastal environments, and dry soil conditions. Coprosma intertexta is commonly included in mixed plantings, grown on exposed sites, or used as an interesting backdrop. The divaricating nature of this plant provides for great interest.
