Coprosma propinqua Matai Magic is an attractive, NZ native shrub featuring lush and glossy, dark coloured foliage. New foliage is dark brown and ages to become variegated with brown and dark green. This evergreen grows with an upright and compact habit to about 1.2 m tall and 80 cm wide and can be trimmed as necessary which encourages new growth. It performs best when grown in full sun on a well-drained site, and is tolerant of most soil conditions, except at the extremes of wet and dry. It is also tolerant of coastal conditions, moderate frost, and wind. Coprosma Matai Magic is commonly included in a mixed planting, trimmed into a hedge, planted around outdoor living areas such as pools and barbecue areas, or used anywhere an attractive, hardy, and low maintenance shrub is required. The dark foliage contrasts well with lighter coloured plants and it looks exceptional when planted against a plain wall.
