Coprosma rhamnoides Details

Coprosma rhamnoides, commonly known as Twiggy Coprosma, is a native shrub found in scrub and forests throughout New Zealand. It grows densely and often has a twiggy appearance. The stems host small green leaves that will often take on yellow tones when grow in full sun or when it is water stressed. Red berries are produced during summer which are great for attracting birds. Twiggy Coprosma typically grows to 3 m tall and 1 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. This evergreen is tolerant of extended dry periods, frost, shade, wind, poor soils, and coastal conditions. Coprosma rhamnoides is commonly included in coastal plantings, planted around the base of larger specimen trees, used in riparian and revegetation plantings, or included in woodland gardens.

Coprosma rhamnoides Hedge

Coprosma rhamnoides hedges are not only functional but add amazing interest and texture to a garden. To grow a Coprosma rhamnoides hedge, the plants should be spaced 60 cm apart. If you desire a dense hedge faster, feel free to space them 40-50 cm apart. If you space them out to 1 m apart, the hedge will take longer to fill in and tend to a lot broader. Trimming should be undertaken during active growth in spring with just the sides trimmed so the plants continue to grow upwards. Most Coprosma rhamnoides hedges are kept to about 1.5 m tall and with regular trimming they look amazing!
