Coprosma robusta Details

Coprosma robusta, commonly known as Karamu or Glossy Karamū, is a fast growing, NZ native shrub. This evergreen features glossy, dark green leaves which are adorned with cream-coloured flowers in spring. The flowers result in masses of orange berries through summer and autumn which are fantastic for attracting birds. Karamu can reach 6 m tall and 3 m wide though it can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this Coprosma are achieved when it is grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It will tolerate heavy soils, frost, cool climates, dry periods, moderate wind, and coastal environments. Coprosma robusta is ideal for planting around ponds and alongside streams, using in native restoration projects, adding to a mixed planting, or planting to attract birds. This is a low maintenance and easy to grow plant that is very forgiving.

Coprosma robusta Hedge

A Coprosma robusta hedge can grow up to 75 cm per year and produces a dense screen quickly. The small leaves are held on a tight network of branches on this evergreen, which collectively makes it perfect for creating privacy in a garden or at the front of a property. The ideal plant spacing is 75 cm apart though you can plant at 50 cm apart if you desire the hedge to establish quicker. Coprosma robusta is suitable for both formal and informal hedges. Be sure to trim this fast-growing plant during summer if a formal hedge is required at any height between 1.5-3 m tall.
