Coprosma rugosa, commonly known as the Needle-Leaved Mountain Coprosma, is an outstanding, NZ native, bushy shrub. It features tiny green leaves that are held on rigid, red-orange stems. Female plants produce blue berries in autumn which adds a further dimension to this plant. It typically grows 3 m tall and 2 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. It is hardy to frost, wind, dry periods, coastal conditions, and cold climates but does require a well-drained site. Coprosma rugosa is a tough plant that is often used as an informal hedge, in mixed plantings, or in alpine gardens. Landscape gardeners will often use this Coprosma to provide interesting colour and texture to a garden.
