Corokia cheesemanii

Korokio

Corokia cheesemanii is a hardy, NZ native shrub that grows with a bushy habit and features attractive, olive green-silver foliage. The small leaves are held on silver stems. Small, star like, yellow flowers which are mildly fragrant are produced in summer as it grows to 2.5 m tall and 1 m wide. Corokia cheesemanii is commonly clipped into a hedge, added to a mixed planting, used for shelter and screening, or included to contrast with plants that have dark foliage.

How to Grow A Corokia cheesemanii Hedge

Corokia cheesemanii makes for a fabulous hedge and it all begins with getting the correct plant spacing. To achieve a dense hedge quickly, the plants should be spaced 45 cm apart. If you space them wider the hedge will take longer to fill in and become wider overall. The best Corokia cheesemanii hedges are lightly trimmed during spring and again in autumn. Be sure to feed them in spring with tree fertiliser to maintain the health and integrity of the hedge.

What are the garden uses for Corokia cheesemanii in NZ?

Corokia cheesemanii is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens that is most commonly grown as a hedge. Beyond hedging, it also makes for fantastic specimen that can be added to a mixed planting, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is a great complement to a modern or coastal garden, bringing both colour and texture to a space. It is the interesting foliage that makes Corokia cheesemanii an excellent choice for a NZ garden.
