Korokio Pounamu, Pounamu Corokia

Corokia Pounamu is a NZ native shrub featuring narrow, olive-green foliage. New foliage has a layer of felt on the underside of the leaves which gives the plant an overall green and grey colouring. Small, yellow flowers are produced in spring and are followed by masses of bright red berries in summer as it reaches 1.2 m tall and 1 m wide. Corokia Pounamu is commonly trimmed into a hedge, added to a mixed planting, used on challenging sites, planted to border an entrance, or used in native plantings.

Pounamu Corokia

The Pounamu Corokia is a NZ native shrub featuring narrow, olive-green foliage. New foliage has a layer of felt on the underside of the leaves which gives the plant an overall green and grey colouring. Small, yellow flowers are produced in spring and are followed by masses of bright red berries in late summer which are great for attracting birds. This is a fast-growing evergreen that typically reaches 1.2 m tall and 1 m wide. It grows best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, and tolerates wind, frost, cool climates, coastal conditions, and dry periods once established. The Pounamu Corokia is commonly trimmed into a hedge, added to a mixed planting, used on challenging sites, planted to border an entrance, or used in native plantings.

A Corokia Pounamu hedge begins with getting the correct plant spacing. To achieve a dense hedge quickly, the plants should be spaced 45 cm apart. If you space them wider the hedge will take longer to fill in and become wider overall. The best Corokia Pounamu hedges are lightly trimmed during spring and again in autumn.
