Cotinus coggygria Details

Cotinus coggygria, commonly known as the Smoke Tree or Smoke Bush, is a deciduous shrub grown for its foliage and interesting flowers. It gets its common name from the billowy hairs that remain in summer from the spent flower clusters, which are pink-purple and resemble a puff of smoke. The foliage comprises dark green leaves which are held off multiple, upright stems. As autumn progresses the leaves develop colourful, red tones before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted on a well-drained, sheltered site in full sun. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry. The Cotinus Smoke Bush is commonly grown as a specimen, trimmed into a hedge, maintained in a courtyard or cottage garden, or planted anywhere the vibrancy and beauty of this plant can be enjoyed.
