Daphne gnidium, commonly known as Flax-Leaved Daphne, is grown for its lovely foliage and flowers. It grows as a rounded shrub carrying leathery, dark green leaves and produces clusters of highly fragrant, cream-coloured flowers in late spring and early summer. It typically grows to 1.6 m tall and the same wide. Best performance with this shrub is achieved when it is grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site that is slightly acidic. It is tolerant of moderate frosts and cool climates, but intolerant of poorly drained soils and extended dry periods. Daphne gnidium is commonly planted around outdoor living areas such as pools and the like, included in mixed and border plantings, maintained in a container, added to cottage gardens, or planted close to a window or door so the fragrance can fill the house.
