Daphne mezereum, commonly known as Mezereon, February Daphne, or Spurge Laurel, is a deciduous shrub that is grown for its foliage and flowers. Highly scented, pink flowers are borne in spring before the leaves emerge and result in red berries. The foliage is lush, mid-green, and develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide, growing best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. Poor results will occur if the soil is not well-drained or any lime or alkaline products are used around this plant. Daphne mezereum is commonly planted around outdoor living areas such as pools and the like, included in mixed and border plantings, maintained in a container, added to cottage gardens, or planted close to a window or door so the fragrance can fill the house.
