Daphne odora alba (aka Daphne odora leucantha), commonly known as Winter Daphne, is a medium-sized shrub grown for its lovely foliage and highly fragrant flowers. It carries leathery, dark green leaves which are complemented beautifully with perfumed, white flowers from late winter into spring. It grows with a rounded shape to about 1 m tall and the same wide, and performs best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is hardy to frost once established and in these environments it may be deciduous. Poor results will occur if the soil is not well-drained or any lime or alkaline products are used around this plant. Daphne odora alba is commonly planted around outdoor living areas such as pools and the like, included in mixed and border plantings, maintained in a container, added to cottage gardens, or planted close to a window or door so the fragrance can fill the house.
