Daphne odora Rubra, commonly known as Red Winter Daphne, is grown for its lovely foliage and flowers. It grows as a rounded shrub carrying leathery, dark green leaves and produces clusters of highly fragrant, purple-red flowers in late winter and spring. It typically grows to 1.2 m tall and the same wide and in cold climates it will be deciduous, otherwise it will remain evergreen. Best performance with this shrub is achieved when it is grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site that is slightly acidic. It is tolerant of moderate frosts and cool climates, but very intolerant of poorly drained soils and dry periods. Daphne Rubra is commonly planted around outdoor living areas such as pools and the like, included in mixed and border plantings, maintained in a container, added to cottage gardens, or planted close to a window or door so the fragrance can fill the house.
