Tuffy Fig, Ficus Tuffi
Ficus Tuffi, also known as Tuffy Fig or Ficus Tuffy, is an evergreen shrub that features leaves that are glossy and light green when young and mature to become dark green. The foliage is both lush and dense, and it grows rapidly to about 3 m tall and 2 m wide. Ficus Tuffi is often used in subtropical gardens, trimmed into a hedge, grown around pool or barbecue areas, maintained in a container, used for topiary, or added to a mixed planting.

The Ficus Tuffi hedge spacing is generally 50 cm between the plants. If you want the hedge to fill in faster, you can shorten the spacing to 40 cm. However, going wider than 50 cm will have two effects. The first is that the gap between the plants at the base will be harder to fill in and this can cause frustration. The second is that the plants will tend to grow wider rather than upward. At a closer spacing the plants compete for light, and in doing so, they push each other upwards. Therefore, The Plant Company recommends a 40-50 cm spacing to achieve an amazing hedge.
A pleached Ficus Tuffi hedge starts with purchasing standardised trees. These typically have a clear stem of 80 cm to 1.5 metres. The trees are then spaced 1-2 metres apart and trimmed to become a ‘hedge on stilts’. The Plant Company considers the optimum pleached hedge for a pool garden or privacy screen to be 1 metre standards spaced 1.25 metres apart. This spacing enables the trees to merge together within 2-3 years. Moreover, at this spacing the trees compete for light with each other and in doing so, push upwards. The result is a narrower pleached hedge than if planted wider apart. Be sure to email in to shop@theplantcompany.co.nz with your request and specify that you are after trees for a pleached hedge.

The growth rate of Ficus Tuffi depends on where it is positioned and how well it is cared for. In a warm climate with good growing conditions, it will grow to 3 m tall and 2 m wide in about six years. Where anything impedes the growth such as drought, wind exposure, cold climates it will grow at a slower rate. While this tree can grow to 3 m tall, it is often clipped to smaller sizes and often into a hedge. Overall, the growth rate is considered medium-fast relative to other hedging plants.
Ficus Tuffi will grow to a height of about 3 metres. In warmer climates it will reach this height much quicker than in cooler and more exposed sites. Watering and maintaining fertility levels will also influence the time to reach this height.
Ficus Tuffi is a popular choice in landscaping projects in NZ. It makes a beautiful hedge and a fantastic screen, but also makes for a lovely specimen or a colourful backdrop for smaller plants. It is the gorgeous foliage and versatility of this plant that makes it a popular choice in landscaping.

Ficus Tuffi grows best in NZ when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of good drainage as plants can become diseased and die if drainage is poor, they are waterlogged, or both. It will tolerate coastal environments, wind, and moderate frost once established.
