Gardenia thunbergia is a large shrub with showy, heavily perfumed flowers, and decorative fruits. From spring through autumn, it produces an abundance of large and fragrant, white flowers. These contrast well with the glossy, dark green foliage. Grey-green fruits result from the flowers and age to a hard and woody structure. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide, growing best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of light frost only. Gardenia thunbergia is commonly grown as a specimen, trimmed into a hedge, or included in a mixed planting.
