Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Blue Thunder is grown for its showy, single flowers. The flowers are a pale mauve-pink with a cherry red centre, and have a papery appearance. They are produced through summer and autumn and are held on upright, slender branches. The flowers are complemented with glossy green leaves which serve as a lovely backdrop. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of short periods of dry as well as moderate frost once established. In cool climates it may become deciduous or partially deciduous during winter. Hibiscus Blue Thunder is commonly grown as a showy specimen, used as an informal hedge, planted for screening, included in a mixed planting, added to a tropical garden, or planted around outdoor living areas.
