Ilex crenata ‘Convexa’, commonly known as the Japanese Holly, is a dense, multi-stemmed, evergreen shrub. It carries small and glossy, dark green leaves which are held off short stems. The foliage is complemented with green-white flowers in spring which result in small, black berries. It typically grows to 1 m tall and 1.2 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. It performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site, and is tolerant of dry periods, cool climates, moderate frost, and coastal environments. The relatively fine texture of Ilex crenata ‘Convexa’ sets it apart from other landscape plants making it ideal for mixed plantings, topiary, borders, or maintaining in a container. This Japanese Holly is often trimmed into a ball and used to border entrances, added to pool gardens and other living areas, or trimmed into a hedge.
