This shrub carries glossy, dark green leaves with a spiny edge and becomes adorned with small, white flowers in summer. The flowers result in masses of red berries that last into winter. This evergreen grows with a dense and upright form to about 4 m tall and 2 m wide, though it can be trimmed as necessary.
