Lavender stoechas Major

Lavender stoechas Major is a popular variety of Lavender that grows as a compact shrub and carries masses of small, light purple flower spikes from spring through summer. The foliage is grey-green and complements the darker flowers nicely. Both the flowers and foliage produce a lovely aroma when cut or brushed against. This evergreen typically grows to 60 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun. It is a hardy plant that will tolerate dry conditions but does require protection from heavy frost when young. Lavender stoechas Major is commonly used in cottage gardens, included in mixed plantings and borders, trimmed into a hedge, or grown in a container. For hedging space plants 30 cm apart. A mass planting either on a bank or as a groundcover will give a dramatic display.

Lavender Major Hedge

A Lavender Major hedge looks amazing if done correctly. The first point is to space the plants 30 cm apart. Don’t go any wider as it becomes harder to fill in the bottom with foliage. The key to keeping a Lavender Major hedge lush and without going woody is to lightly trim it twice a year in spring and autumn. It will still flower well even with this level of trimming.
