Leucothoe fontanesiana Nana, commonly known as Coastal Doghobble, is a small shrub grown for its foliage and flowers. New foliage is purple-dark red and ages to a dark green, which results in a multi-coloured plant. During the cooler months the leaves develop colourful bronze and purple-red tones. The foliage is complemented with clusters of small, white flowers in spring. It typically grows to 50 cm tall and 1 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of cool climates, moderate frost once established, and short periods of dry. Leucothoe Nana is commonly included in mixed plantings or borders, mass planted as a groundcover, maintained in a container, planted around outdoor living areas such as pools, or used anywhere vibrant colour is desired.
