“Nigra” is a stunning variety of Magnolia due to its spectacular flowers and small stature. It bears masses of large and showy, purple flowers from late winter through into summer. Flowering begins on the naked stems before the foliage emerges. The lush foliage is dark green and takes on yellow tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide and can easily be contained with trimming. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Nigra” is commonly grown as a specimen, included in a mixed planting, added to a cottage garden, planted around outdoor living areas, or used as a backdrop for smaller plants.
