Metrosideros carminea, commonly known as the Crimson Rata Vine, is a sturdy climber that can grow up to 15 m tall if left untrimmed. It climbs by sending out roots that adhere to the trunks of host trees or penetrating and clinging to rough surfaces. If it has nothing to climb it will grow as a small shrub to about 2 m tall and 1 m wide. Plants carry dark green, leathery leaves and produce masses of bright red flowers from late winter through spring. It performs best when grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, and will grow in most soil conditions, except extreme wet or dry. Metrosideros carminea is tolerant of dry periods, coastal conditions, cool climates, and moderate frost. The Crimson Rata Vine is commonly used as a standalone shrub or grown as a climber on a fence or the like.
