Metrosideros ‘Fiji Fire’, commonly known as Pohutukawa, Southern Rata, or NZ Christmas Tree, grows as a large shrub and is renowned for its eye-catching foliage. It carries dark green foliage with new growth being bright orange-red creating a dual-coloured plant. Masses of small, red flowers are produced through summer that are great for attracting birds. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 3 m wide, though can be trimmed to smaller sizes. Best results with this variety are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of poor soils, dry periods, frost, and coastal conditions but will benefit from being protected while it is establishing. Metrosideros ‘Fiji Fire’ is an excellent choice for coastal and courtyard gardens, adding to a mixed planting, using as a backdrop for smaller plants, planting around outdoor living areas, or for maintaining in a container. This variety of NZ Christmas tree is commonly clipped in an attractive hedge.
