“Variegatus” is an evergreen shrub grown for its attractive foliage. It produces spiny leaves which are variegated dark green with a cream edge. The foliage is complemented with clusters of small and highly-scented, white flowers in spring which are followed by small, blue-black berries. This showy plant typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 2 m wide, performing best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun or partial shade. It will tolerate dry periods, coastal environments, and frost. The lovely foliage and hardiness of this plant makes it very versatile. It is often used to brighten up a shady corner or used to contrast with darker coloured plants. It makes for a colourful hedge and is well-suited to being maintained in container, planted around outdoor living areas, or added to a mixed planting.
