In spring it bears fragrant and showy, purple flowers in clusters. Pittosporum patulum is under-rated for planting in NZ gardens but is well suited mixed plantings or anywhere a rewarding NZ native is wanted.

Pittosporum patulum Details

Pittosporum patulum is a small NZ native tree grown for its interesting flowers and foliage. It grows with a slender trunk bearing dark green, coarsely toothed leaves that become longer and smoother with age. In spring it bears fragrant and showy, purple flowers in clusters. These result in small brown berries which are great for attracting birds. This hardy evergreen typically grows to 5 m tall and 2.5 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. It grows best on a well-drained site in full sun or partial shade with good moisture during dry periods. It is hardy to frosts, wind, coastal conditions, and cold climates. Pittosporum patulum is under-rated for planting in NZ gardens but is well suited mixed plantings or anywhere a rewarding NZ native is wanted.
