What are the landscaping uses for Pittosporum Silver Ball in NZ?

Pittosporum Silver Ball is a popular choice in landscaping projects in NZ. It makes a beautiful low hedge and is also clipped into topiary balls. This shrub is well suited to modern and formal gardens and is widely used around pools and other outdoor living spaces. The Plant Company often recommends growing this variety in a pot to border an entrance. It is the lush and bright foliage and versatility of this plant that makes it a popular choice in landscaping.

Pittosporum Silver Ball spacing

The Pittosporum Silver Ball hedge spacing is generally 30 cm between the plants. If you want the hedge to fill in faster, you can shorten the spacing to 25 cm. However, going wider than 40 cm will have two effects. The first is that the gap between the plants at the base will be harder to fill in and this can cause frustration. The second is that the plants will tend to grow wider rather than upward. At a closer spacing the plants compete for light, and in doing so, they push each other upwards. Therefore, The Plant Company recommends a 30 cm spacing to achieve an amazing hedge that is 50 cm tall. If, on the other hand, you wish to grow them as discrete plants, they should be spaced about 1 m apart.

What is the Pittosporum Silver Ball growth rate?

The growth rate of Pittosporum Silver Ball depends on where it is positioned and how well it is cared for. In a warm climate with good growing conditions, it will grow to 60 cm tall and the same wide in about 5 years. Where anything impedes the growth such as drought, wind exposure, cold climates it will grow at a slower rate.

Pittosporum Silver Ball plants grow best in NZ when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It will tolerate coastal environments, wind, and frost.

Pittosporum Silver Ball pruning

Pruning Pittosporum Silver Ball is generally to retain its compact and rounded "golf ball" shape. In many cases, it requires minimal pruning to maintain this form. If you desire a very formal, tight shape, light pruning can be done at any time. Pruning is used to increase the density of the plant and more effective on younger plants. Generally, the best time to prune this Pittosporum is in spring or summer. This allows the plant to recover and produce new growth during its active growing season. While Pittosporum Silver Ball tolerates pruning, try to avoid heavy pruning as this can lead to dead stems and a woody appearance until it recovers.
