Pittosporum Stephens Island Details

Pittosporum tenuifolium Stephens Island is a NZ native, evergreen shrub with a tidy and compact growth habit. The foliage is smooth, grey-green, and held densely on upright stems. It is complemented with small and fragrant, dark red flowers in spring. Together the flowers and foliage are very aesthetic. This popular plant typically grows to 4 m tall and 3 m wide though can be contained with trimming. It performs best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of wind, coastal conditions, periods of dry, moderate frost, and most soil types, except extreme wet. Pittosporum Stephens Island is commonly included in coastal gardens, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, trimmed into a hedge, or planted for shelter and screening. Space plants 50 cm apart when growing a Stephens Island hedge.
