Ribes laurifolium Details

Ribes laurifolium, commonly known as the Flowering Currant, is grown for its flowers and small fruits. Through winter and spring, it produces clusters of green-yellow flowers which are often followed by edible, black berries. These are borne in clusters through summer off the upright stems which also host the mid-green foliage. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide and should be cut back by half each winter. Pruning not only contains growth but also encourage new wood for longer flowering. Best performance is achieved when grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Being deciduous it will tolerate frost and cool climates. Ribes laurifolium is commonly grown as an ornamental where it is added to a mixed planting or grown as an informal hedge.
