Ribes speciosum, commonly known as the Flowering Fuchsia, is grown for its lovely flowering. Through spring and into summer it produces clusters of red, fuchsia-like flowers which are held in a pendulous manner. These are borne off gently arching, prickly stems which also host the mid-green foliage. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance is achieved when grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It will tolerate frost and cool climates and, in these conditions, it may become deciduous, otherwise it will remain evergreen. Ribes speciosum is commonly grown as an ornamental where it is added to a mixed planting or grown as an informal hedge.
