Red-black berries follow the flowers. As autumn progresses, the leaves develop yellow tones before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide but can be trimmed as necessary. Sambucus nigra makes for a lovely specimen and is well suited to mixed plantings, cottage and “white” gardens, or serving as a backdrop for smaller plants with the added benefit of Elderberries.

Sambucus nigra Details

Sambucus nigra, commonly known as Elderberry, is a highly ornamental shrub. It carries large, dark green leaves which are adorned with fragrant, white flower heads in summer. The flower heads are mass of small flowers and provide an impressive contrast with the foliage. Red-black berries follow the flowers and used for making Elderberry wine. As autumn progresses, the leaves develop yellow tones before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide but can be trimmed as necessary. Best growth is achieved when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and dry periods but does require wind protection while it is establishing. Sambucus nigra makes for a lovely specimen and is well suited to mixed plantings, cottage and “white” gardens, or serving as a backdrop for smaller plants with the added benefit of Elderberries.
