Sambucus nigra Aurea, commonly known as European Elderberry, is a highly ornamental, deciduous shrub. It carries large, golden yellow leaves which are adorned with fragrant, white flower heads in summer. Purple-black berries follow the flowers and can be used to make elderberry wine. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide. Sambucus nigra Aurea makes a lovely specimen and is well suited to mixed plantings, cottage, and modern gardens, or using as a backdrop for smaller plants with the added benefit of Elderberries.

Sambucus nigra Aurea Details

Sambucus nigra Aurea, commonly known as European Elderberry, is a highly ornamental, deciduous shrub. It carries large, golden yellow leaves which are adorned with fragrant, white flower heads in summer. The flower heads are mass of small flowers and provide an impressive complement to the foliage. Purple-black berries follow the flowers and can be used to make elderberry wine. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide and can easily be contained with trimming as necessary. Best growth is achieved when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and dry periods but does require wind protection while it is establishing. Sambucus nigra Aurea makes a lovely specimen and is well suited to mixed plantings, cottage, and modern gardens, or using as a backdrop for smaller plants with the added benefit of Elderberries.
