Sambucus nigra Black Lace Details

Sambucus nigra Black Lace is a variety of the commonly known, Elderberry, and is a highly ornamental, deciduous shrub. It carries lacy, dark purple leaves which become adorned with fragrant, pink-purple flower heads in summer. The flower heads are mass of small flowers and provide an impressive contrast with the foliage. Purple-black berries follow the flowers and can be used to make Elderberry wine. As autumn progresses the leaves develop red tones before falling. It typically grows to 2.5 m tall and the same wide but can be trimmed as necessary. Best growth is achieved when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and dry periods but does require wind protection while it is establishing. Sambucus nigra Black Lace makes a lovely specimen and is well suited to mixed plantings, cottage, and modern gardens, or using as a backdrop for smaller plants with the added benefit of Elderberries.
