Sophora molloyi, Molloys Kōwhai, Cook Strait Kōwhai
Sophora molloyi is a variety of Kowhai which grows as a bushy, spreading tree to about 6 m tall and 4 m wide. Its natural habitat is coastal scrub on exposed maritime sites, hence its common name, the Cook Strait Kowhai. It produces pendulous clusters of golden-yellow flowers from autumn until spring. Sophora molloyi is commonly included in native and revegetation plantings, planted to provide winter colour, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in coastal gardens, or planted to attract birds.
