Syringa Congo Details

Syringa Congo, commonly known as Congo Lilac or the Japanese Lilac Tree, is grown for its showy flowers from late spring through summer. During this time, purple buds open to reveal clusters of fragrant, single, purple-blue flowers. These are absolutely stunning and are also great for attracting butterflies. The foliage comprises dark green, heart-shaped leaves and develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows upright with a somewhat loose habit to about 2.5 m tall and the same wide though can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this plant is achieved when grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of light shade, short periods of dry, frost, and cool climates. Syringa Congo is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in cottage gardens, or used as a flowering hedge.
