Syringa Esther Staley Details

Syringa Esther Staley, commonly known as French Lilac, is a deciduous shrub grown for its showy and perfumed flowers. Purple buds open through late spring and summer to reveal clusters of the single, soft-pink blooms which are both stunning and great for attracting butterflies. The foliage comprises dark green, heart-shaped leaves which develop yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows upright with a somewhat loose habit to about 2.5 m tall and 2 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this variety is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of light shade, short periods of dry, frost, and cool climates. Syringa Esther Staley is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in cottage gardens, or grown as a flowering hedge.
