Passiflora edulis Details
Commonly known as Passionfruit, this popular plant is grown for its delicious, subtropical fruit. The fruit are oval, dark purple when mature, and filled with a juicy interior. Attractive purple flowers with a light fragrance are produced in spring and result in the ripe fruit in summer. This climber carries glossy, mid-green leaves and may reach up to 4 m in length, but can be easily contained with trimming. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered, frost free site with good fertility. It will generally survive a light frost and short periods of dry. Passionfruit are commonly grown for fruit production, as an attractive climber on a trellis, or for both! Separate male and female plants are not required for fruit production.
