Aeonium canariense Details

Aeonium canariense, commonly known as the Giant Velvet Rose, is a succulent grown for its symmetrical rosettes of velvet coated, fleshy leaves. The leaves are a fresh green colour and taken on red-pink tones in full sun conditions. In summer, a flower spike sometimes emerges from the centre of the rosette to bear small, bright yellow flowers. It typically grows to 40 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when grown in full sun on a well-drained site. Plants are tolerant of light frost only and require protection from strong winds. They are, however, tolerant of dry soils and coastal environments. Aeonium canariense is excellent for growing in a container, planting in the more arid parts of the garden, rock gardens, or for use in modern gardens where something unusual yet symmetrical is required.
