Sempervivum calcareum Details

Sempervivum calcareum, commonly known as the Houseleek Sempervivum, is a smaller succulent grown for its foliage. It grows as a mat of fleshy rosettes with leaves that have a purple tip. During cooler periods or in times of moisture stress the plants may develop purple tones. Small, star shaped, pink flowers are borne on short stems in summer. Each rosette is typically 5-6 cm tall and 8-10 cm wide, but it will grow much wider over time as more rosettes are produced. Best results with this succulent are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, frost-free site. It is tolerant of extended dry periods. Sempervivum calcareum is commonly grown in a container or included in rock and Mediterranean themed gardens.
