Acer griseum is a spectacular variety of Maple owing to its lovely form and foliage. It grows to about 12 m tall and 8 m wide with an open branched habit which gives it a light and airy appearance. Small leaves emerge green in spring and remain this colour until autumn when they develop brilliant-red and orange tones before falling. The bark is peeling, papery, and a chestnut-brown colour. This Maple grows best when positioned in full sun on a well-drained site and while trees will grow on a range of soil types they will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. It is nonetheless tolerant of frost, cool climates, and moderate wind. This tree is suited to parks and larger gardens where it is often used as a specimen with the added advantage of providing great shade.
