Commonly known as the Silver Maple, this deciduous tree is grown for its tidy form and colourful, autumn foliage. The lush and attractive leaves are borne light green in spring, age to become dark green, then develop impressive yellow, orange, and red tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a narrow, vase shaped habit when young and tends to broaden out as it matures, eventually reaching 25 m tall and 12 m wide. This impressive tree grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site and will grow on a range of soil types, barring the extremes of wet and dry. It is tolerant of coastal environments but does require wind protection when young which will help produce a better structured tree. The Silver Maple is commonly grown as a specimen in large gardens and parks, or used in avenue plantings.
