“Scolopendrifolium” is an impressive Japanese Maple featuring a rich display of fine and colourful foliage. This attractive, deciduous tree produces yellow-green leaves in spring which age to become long, narrow, and bright green. As autumn progresses the leaves develop lovely shades of orange and yellow before falling. During spring it produces small, red-purple flowers which are generally regarded as being not significant. These result in winged seeds known as samaras. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 2.5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, short periods of dry, and will grow on a range of soil types but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. “Scolopendrifolium” makes for a magnificent specimen and a lovely shade tree and is also well suited to avenue planting.
