“Autumn Moon” is a variety of Japanese Maple grown for its colourful and lush foliage. The leaves on this deciduous tree will vary in colour depending on whether it is grown in full sun or partial shade. In shaded conditions the foliage is yellow-green, whereas in sunny positions it is burnt orange-yellow. In both instances the foliage develops peach, pink, and orange tones in autumn before falling. It grows with an open habit to form a crown of gently arching branches, eventually reaching 5 m tall and the same wide. Best results with this variety are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It will grow on a range of soil types but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, some wind, and coastal environments but will benefit and produce a better tree if protected while it is establishing. “Autumn Moon” makes for a magnificent specimen and is ideal for adding to a mixed planting in a large garden.
