“Suminagashi” is a variety of Japanese Maple that features a rich display of colourful foliage. The foliage emerges scarlet red in spring, ages to become a maroon colour in summer, then turns scarlet red again in autumn before falling. It grows with an open and broad habit to eventually reach 8 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this variety are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and will grow on a range of soil types, except at the extremes of wet and dry. This magnificent tree is ideal for including in a mixed planting in a large garden, growing as a specimen, planting to soften a bland wall, or for using anywhere the spectacular colour can be enjoyed.
