Agathis australis Details

Agathis australis, commonly known as the Kauri Tree, is a NZ native that grows into a large and stately tree. The small leaves emerge lime green but quickly age to become a bronze colour. It grows with a narrow and upright habit, often extending by up to one metre per year. As the tree ages the crown begins to broaden and may reach 20 m in width as it grows to 30 m tall. Kauris grow best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. Frost and wind protection during establishment are crucial, as is good soil moisture levels during dry periods. Agathis australis will tolerate heavy soils and moderate frost once established. Kauri trees make for impressive specimens in large gardens or parks and are well suited to including in a NZ native revegetation exercise.
